The HIV/Aids pandemic in our country has had a large impact on the children, a large number are orphaned due to the deaths of their parents. these children are often left to their own devises without any source of financial support. There are instances where there is a grand mother, who is expected to care for these children and a social pension being the only financial source.
The programs delivered to our children are individual, strength based with positive reinforcement. Each child has the right to receive the best service that we can offer. There is no discrimination of any kind between race, gender, family origin and personal history or health status. From the moment the child is placed in our care we strive to meet our mission statement, to work.
The East London Child and Youth Care Centre (ELCYCC) has a long and proud history in East London. In existence since 1924, emphasis was placed on custodial care in the early years, focusing on feeding, clothing, educating and housing war orphans.
The Glen Stella Campus was recently paid a visit by the Gonubie Primary School Interact team. The children handed over clothing and Easter Eggs that they had collected. They spent some time interacting with the younger children by playing games.
Other schools groups taking an interest in our work include Merrifield College and Hudson Park Primary. They visit the centre weekly to assist with various Centre activities.
The Board of Management of the East London Child and Youth Care Centres has had to re-evaluate the operational plan of the Centre to ensure long term sustainability.
The following measures have been put into practice since January 2012.
